You are invited to come and join Kate and Fiona who are creating a Bee garden at Botanika. The aim of Bee garden project is to increase public awareness of the needs of bees and to demonstrate how anyone can make their garden more bee friendly. An open day ‘Bee Aware’ is planned for the 30th June 13.30 to 17.30 from when the public can visit and learn about the bee hives on site from the bee keeper.
We want to show that bee gardens are not just attractive to bees but to other pollinators and humans too!
Preparations of the bee garden have already started, the site was covered in black plastic last year to kill off the weeds. Then in March a mixed hedge was planted on three sides of the garden to create shelter from the wind and to encourage wildlife.
Hazel was coppiced from another garden and this has been used to create the back of a seating area. On the 14th April we will be creating structures from the hazel (locally sourced) (so if you are interested you can learn how to weave hazel) and to create divisions within the Bee garden. These will also act as supports for climbing plants.
We will be creating paths, planting shrubs, dividing and planting perennials and direct sowing annuals.
Kate will give a tour of the field where she runs her edible flower business, Botanika. So there will be an opportunity to find out more about edible flowers. Fiona will talk about the pollinating plants that will be planted in the Bee garden. Please contact us to let us know whether you are coming and we will send you instructions on how to get to the field. For those of you who have difficulty getting there please let us know and we will see what we can arrange. Don’t forget to wear warm waterproof clothing if it is cold, boots, gardening gloves and if you have a fork and a trowel please bring them.
